Philippians 4:8; 1 Peter 2:9; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 Peter 1:5-9

Phil 4:8 - Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

School paper - teacher wrote on it “Excellent” - not good, not just a smiley face.

Excellent - extremely good, outstanding, superb, magnificent - from the latin - preeminent, to excel. It means those things that are way beyond the standard.

ἀρετή - areté (ar-et’-ay) - moral goodness, virtue. Usage: goodness, a gracious act, virtue, uprightness.

MORAL EXCELLENCE or VIRTUE = Goodness (one of the fruit of the spirit)


Excellence of God -

1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises (excellencies) of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

2 Peter 1:3 - His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness (excellencies).

Building in excellence -

2 Peter 1:5-9 - Goodness = moral excellence - knowing what is right and wrong and excelling in it.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

If we really want to rid ourselves of stinking thinking we need to “declare the excellences” of our God and build these same excellencies in our lives. IF ANYTHING IS EXCELLENT
