31 Christian Ways To Reduce Stress

24. Exercise - Proverbs 24:5

Proverbs 24:5 -A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. (KJV)

When a person is depressed they often sit or lay around the house. Most of us do this when we are feeling stressed out or anxious. But sitting or laying around is actually the worst thing you can do. It makes your mind race and your thoughts get away from you. Or you slip into a world where you don’t have to think at all.

The answer is to get up and go exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic exercise "increases your overall health and your sense of well-being, which puts more pep in your step every day." Exercise increase the flow of endorphins which are chemicals that are released from the pituitary gland that make the brain feel good and help reduce pain.

A while back I went to the hospital with a man whose wife was having major surgery. I was concerned about this man because he sometimes let’s stress get to him until he gets physically ill. But after his wife went back for surgery we had prayer and he excused himself. What I didn’t know was that he went down to the rehab facility and got on the treadmill. They even let him take a shower down there. He came back and was ready for whatever happened.

Another benefit to exercise is that it helps you to focus on other things. It is “meditation in motion”. I often pray, quote scriptures, or meditate on God’s word when I run or walk. I often feel closer to the Lord when I get done.

And there is a third benefit. Exercise can help you burn unwanted calories and fat that slow us down and make us feel sluggish. When you feel sluggish it is easy to get in a cycle of frustration and depression.

The weather is getting nicer and it is time to burn off some stress. Get outside today and do some exercises. May God bless you as you increase your strength and knowledge today.

PRAYER THOUGHT: You, Oh Lord, are God Almighty! Your power and might are known throughout the world of all generations. Help me to get out of my chair today and move more. Let me meditate on your word as I walk and run with you by my side. Thank you for Jesus and the gift of life. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN!
