31 Christian Ways To Reduce Stress

22. Remember the Cross - 1 Corinthians 1:18

22. Remember the Cross - 1 Corinthians 1:18

1 Corinthians 1:18 -For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved.

The other day I was reading in the Bible about Jesus in the garden on the night of his betrayal. I discovered a verse that I have heard a thousand times but it hit me with new meaning. “Being in anguish, He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground” (Luke 22:44). How can any stress or anguish I bear be greater than what my savior experience before and during the cross? It can’t compare.

Jesus bore the cross for all the sins of the world. God is light and there is no darkness in him at all (1 Jn 1:5). So when Jesus took on all our sins he became estranged from God. He bore our sins all alone.

When I think of the cross I am strengthened and my troubles fade. If my savior can bear the load of the world than I believe he will help me carry my load. I believe that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is the cross of Jesus. I when I remember the cross I am compelled to get on my knees and say, “Thank-you, Jesus.”

I never met Verna Thomas of McGehee, Arkansas. But I know a poem that she wrote that has inspired millions of people to think and look to the cross in their times of trouble and in peace. The title of the poem is “The Cross in My Pocket”.

I carry a Cross in my Pocket

A simple reminder to me

Of the fact that I am a Christian

No matter where I may be

This little Cross is not magic

Nor is it a good luck charm

It isn't meant to protect me

From every physical harm.

It's not for identification

For all the world to see

It simply is an understanding

Between my Savior and me

When I put my hand in my pocket

To bring out a coin or a key

The Cross is there to remind me

Of the price He paid for me.

It reminds me too, to be thankful

For my blessings day by day

And to strive to serve Him better

In all that I do and say.

It is also a daily reminder

Of the peace and comfort I share

With all who know my Master

And give themselves to His care.

So, I carry a Cross in my pocket

Reminding me, no one but me

That Jesus Christ is Lord of my life

If only I'll let Him be.

May God bless you today as you look to the cross during your times of anguish and remember that Jesus Christ bore that cross and all our sins so that we could have the hope of eternal life.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Savior Devine; I want to thank you for your grace and forgiveness which was extended to me through your Son Jesus who bore all my sin and sorrow on the cross. Help me to extend forgiveness in the same way. Help me to find strength in his suffering when my load becomes heavy and hard to bear. I love you, Lord. You are my rock, my strength, and my shelter. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
