8. Allow Extra Time - Matthew 6:27
Matthew 6:27 - Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
I had a man who told me he thought Sunday morning was too stressful. “You don’t know the circus that goes on at my house,” he said. “There is such a rush to get breakfast, get everyone dressed, get in the car and get here on time.” He looked at me with genuine pain and frustration and said, “We are usually ready to kill each other and that’s not a worshipful attitude to have.”
Another woman who taught Sunday School rushed in at 10 after class time on Sunday mornings and rushed to prepare her lesson for her class. The kids in the mean time just waited and played until she was ready. She told me “We don’t have enough time for our lesson…I never get the lesson finished!” So we talked about how she could use the time a bit more frugally.
I find it funny that people can get dressed and ready for school and work without problem but when it comes to church we are unorganized and unprepared. It’s like a different schedule or attitude exist when it comes to church. I have a lot to do on Sundays but I try to allow time so I don’t get stressed. Getting to church early helps me keep things organized and prepare my heart for service. This preparation starts during the week so that I am prepared for Sunday morning. I usually make sure I have clean clothes and my shoes are polished on Saturday evening.
I asked both the lady and the man how they managed during the rest of the week. The man told me that they prepare for school the night before by making sure book bags where packed and by the door. They made sure that the kids had clean clothes the night before. The coffee maker automatically turned on at a certain time. Mom had breakfast on the table at a certain time. And they all piled into the car 10 minutes early so they could anticipate traffic and be on time. The Sunday School teacher told me a similar routine and added, “In twenty years I have never been late to work!”
So I told them that if they used the same care and logic on Sunday morning they would be less stressed and have more time to get things done. The man started organizing his family on Saturday night and from that time on they were at church early and in better form. He thanked me and told me how being prepared and leaving early reduced stress. He said they even started singing songs on the way to church to prepare their hearts for worship.
The Sunday School teacher on the other hand continued on with things as usual. She finally gave up teaching to everyone’s relief. The teacher who took her place was there early to greet her students and talk with them. She had prepared her lesson in advance so that they had plenty of time to share and learn together.
Being ready and leaving a few minutes early can reduce a lot of stress and help you focus on what is ahead rather than what was behind. May God bless you as you prepare and allow a little extra time in your schedule.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Lord, I want to worship you with all my heart. Forgive me when I rush and get stressed out. Forgive me for distractions that rob me of focusing on you. I pray that you will help me to be more organize and less stressed over time constraints. Thank you for Jesus who reminded me that I couldn’t add even a single hour to my life by stressing out. It is in Jesus’ name that I pray, AMEN!
