31 Christian Ways to Reduce Stress

3. Get up on time - Proverbs 6:9-11

3. Get up on time - Proverbs 6:9-11

Proverbs 6:9-11 - How long will you lie there, you sluggard?

When will you get up from your sleep?

A little sleep, a little slumber,

a little folding of the hands to rest—

and poverty will come on you like a thief

and scarcity like an armed man.

There is an old saying that my mother used to tell me as a teenager, ”The early bird gets the worm.” This was usually prompted by the 100th time she had to come in to tell me to get out of bed. I would sarcastically say, “But who, besides birds, wants worm?”

These days the screeching sound of the snooze alarm is enough to “wake the dead” but you just keep on hitting that button. Then you wake up, suddenly realizing that you don’t have much time, so you panic to get a shower, shave, fix your hair, drink a scalding cup of coffee, and rush out to the car only to realize the battery is dead and you can’t find the window scraper to clear off the impossibly deep layer of frost. You finally get it started and back down the drive as your coffee falls off the top of the car. You get to work only to realize your briefcase is still at home. The rest of the day seems like a maddening attempt to catch up. No wonder you are stressed.

Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed. My house now has two grandchildren and four grown adults tying to use one bathroom and keep our sanity. But I have rediscovered that if I get up earlier than everyone else I can get some things done in my office while it is nice and quiet in the house. I also use the time to do my Bible reading, devotions, and prayer before the distractions start. When you are not in a rush when you start the day the rest of the day seems more relaxed.

One of the reasons that I started this blog on reducing and removing stress is for me. I need the lessons on trusting God and relaxing as much as you do. I am not an expert giving advise and sending you a bill. No, I am a fellow traveller on the road of life who is trying to avoid a few potholes and ruts. Perhaps we can learn together.

The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy (Psalm 65:8). May God bless you as you begin to get up early to avoid the rush.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Lord Eternal; I praise you in the morning, especially this morning. You give me the rest I need through the night. You greet me early when I rise. You open my eyes to the truth and your ways. I praise your for your love and mercy. I ask that you forgive me of my sins and my faithlessness. Help me to trust you more each day. Thank you for Jesus and for taking away my iniquity. In the name of Jesus, AMEN!
