28 Helpful Hints for Bible Reading

17. Pray the Bible - Psalm 119:5

17. Pray the Bible - Psalm 119:5

Psalm 119:5 -Oh, that my ways were steadfast

in obeying your decrees!

A Bible college professor once asked the class if they were praying God's Word. Most of the students answered yes without really understanding what he meant. So he opened the Bible and began praying:

Dear Lord,

Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff

that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Lord, Help this class and myself to be counted among those who delight in your law and meditate on it day and night. Open our eyes that we may see the wonderful things in you word.

In Jesus' Name,

It was simple, beautiful and united the hearts of student and professor in God's word. I can't think of a better way to read and pray at the same time.

Most of the Psalms are prayers to God and are easy to pray. But almost any section of the Bible can be prayed to God. Some books may take a little more ingenuity. The key to praying scripture is to let the Holy Spirit lead you.

Yesterday my reading was from Job and one section in particular stood out to me. So I prayed that section to God asking him to test my heart and look for the hidden secrets there. It was very revealing and I must admit I had some things I needed to confess and repent. But afterwards I was more secure in my relationship and walk with the Lord.

May God bless you today as you lift the Holy Word up in prayer to God. May his word grow in your life and build you up in your walk with him.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God, Thank you for your word. Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. Help me to be blameless and to keep your word with all my heart. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN!
