30. Be Ready With An Answer - 1 Peter 3:15-16
30. Share your faith with those who show interest - 1 Peter 3:15-16
1 Peter 3:15-16 - But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
It seems funny that one would have to say that Christians are supposed to be ready to share their faith. When we shine the light of Jesus in our lives it will naturally draw some to you. They may ask, "What has made this change in your life?" Or someone one might want to know why you go to church or believe in Jesus. Sometimes their questions will be asked out of genuine curiosity and other times the questions may be mocking or even angry.
The answer may be simple in our minds. But when we try to put that answer to words it may not be as clear as we like it to be. Sometimes we try to over complicate the question by giving it a big answer when it just needs a simple one. You don't have to give a big theological exposition on creation vs. evolution or try to prove the existence of God or have 300 verses memorized and ready to nail someone to the wall. But you do need to be ready!
There was a woman who was singing a hymn while she was knitting. Her 8-year-old grandson sat at her feet playing and suddenly looked up at the woman with a quizzical expression on his face. The woman looked down with love and asked, "What's the matter, honey?"
"Why do you sing so many songs about Jesus," He inquired.
She smiled and said, "Jesus makes the joy flow from my heart. He saved me from my sins and has given me a mansion in glory."
"Oh," he said. "Then he got that puzzled look again. "Grandma, where is glory?" Grandma was glad to tell her grandson all about heaven and how Jesus has given her the hope of eternal life with her Lord.
Most people are like the young boy. They aren't looking for a deep theological answer. What they want to know is why YOU believe in Jesus. Be ready to give them an answer. That answer may raise more questions for them to ask but that's okay. Be ready to answer their questions with gentleness and with confidence in Christ.
May God bless you today as you shine the light of Jesus Christ. May he prepare your heart to give a loving answer to those who want to know more.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Lord; You are so complex... all powerful, all knowing, always present... amazing and beyond comprehension. I can hardly wrap my mind around all that you are. It amazes me that you love us so much. Help me to be able to give simple and straight forward answers to those who ask me about my faith. Let your Holy Spirit use my voice to share with others. Let your Spirit work in their lives that they may understand and receive the Light of the World, JESUS. It is in his name that I pray, AMEN!
