Whatever Is Pure

Philippians 4:8; James 3:13-18; 1 Timothy 5:22; 1 John 3:1-3


Philippians 4:8;

Phil 4:8 - Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Whatever is HAGNOS! ἁγνός - hagnos (hag-nos’) - is an adjective that describes those things that are holy, sacred, or free from defilement of sin and the world.

So once again we are talking about things that are of God. Put your mind on sacred and holy things.

I often think of the God in this way when I read Revelation 4. It is the throne room of God. The four living creatures continually gives praises to God saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, Who was, and is, and is to come. (vs 8)

The 24 Elders join in singing ““You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” (vs 11)

The four creatures who represent all the living creation praise God for his holy and eternal attribute. The 24 elders who represent those saved under the Old and New covenant sing praises to what God has done in creation.

We are to put our mind on God who is holy. But God also gives wisdom that comes from heaven that is first and foremost, pure, unlike the wisdom or knowledge we get in the world.

James 3:13-18 - Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure (hagnē); then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

We are supposed to put our mind on these things that are pure and holy. But we are also supposed to be pure.

1 Timothy 5:22 - Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure (hagnon).

1 John 3:1-3 - See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

All who have this hope in him purify (hanizei) themselves, just as he is pure (hagnos).
