FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT - Faithfulness
Good evening and welcome to our nightly Bible devotional. We have been talking about the slices of the spiritual fruit found in Galatians 5:22-23. Do you know them by heart yet? The slices are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are the aspects or slices that we are supposed to produce. Just like you can’t grow just one slice of an orange, we are supposed to produce the whole of the spiritual fruit and not just specialize in just one or two slices. We produce this fruit when we walk in step with the Spirit. He then produces the desired results in our lives.
We talked about love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and goodness. We are basically down to the last three. And tonight is a big one. FAITHFULNESS. Now we aren’t talking about having faith. We are talking about be faithful.
What does it mean to be faithful? Faithfulness in the dictionary is defined as the quality of being faithful; fidelity. devotion, loyalty, consistency. It compares this to faithfulness in marriage and that is not too far off the mark.
Fidelity is a great word. RCA Victor used to have a mascot of a dog with his head cocked listening to his owners voice on a victrola. The idea was that the sound was so true to master’s voice that the dog thought it was the master. One of the words in their motto was fidelity.
The Greek word in Galatians 5:22 for faithfulness is πίστις -pistis (pis’-tis) which literally means confidently persuaded. In other words it is a faith that is so strong it can’t be shaken. In secular writing pistis refers to a written guarantee. According to word helps pistis or faithfulness is always a gift from God, and never something that can be produced by people. In other words, God spirit must be working in your life for you to produce the aspect or slice of faithfulness. The Lord continuously births faith in the yielded believer so they can know His will (1 Jn 5:4).
God himself is faithful. Paul said in 1 Corithians 1:9 that God is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” In fact, every time God has made an agreement or covenant in the Bible it was never him who broke his word. It was the other party. Now that is faithful. 2 Tm 2:13 tells us that God cannot be unfaithful because it is in his very essence to be faithful.
God is faithful in five ways to those who yeild to him.
1. God is faithful in providing for you. “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
2. God is faithful to uplift and encouerage you. “…being confident of this, that he that began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).
3. God is faithful in comforting you. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). “Cast all your anxieties on Him, for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
4. God is faithful in strengthening you. “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
5. God is faithful in sending community of support. “…Do not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).
The Lord wants us to be faithful like him. He wants to produce in us the quality of his faithfulness. And faithfulness is a condition of the heart that is proved out in action. We can be show our faithfulness by being busy and working hard for the Lord in his kingdom to carry out his will.
Faithfulness is one of those qualities that grows as more and more as we walk with the Lord. I love how the other aspects or slices help us to grow in faithfulness. Love leads to joy. Joy leads to peace. Peace leads to patience. Patience leads to kindness. Kindness to others leads to goodness glorifying God. Goodness leads to faithfulness that builds more and more each day. Let’s have a word of prayer together.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Holy One, You a have been so good and faithful to me. Like David said in Psalm 139; Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? Lord you are always faithfully by my side even when I have been less than faithful to you. I praise you for your forgiveness and your patience. I ask that you build my faithfulness each day. Help me to be the person you have called me to be. Produce in me the spiritual fruit of faithfulness. It is in Jesus’ name that I pray. AMEN!
Let’s go produce some fruit. Jesus said in Re 2:10 “…Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.” So go and produce the spiritual slice of faithfulness today. I hope you will join us tomorrow night at 6pm. God bless you and have a great night.
