#7. Worldliness / Mammon
REASONS WHY PEOPLE DON'T SHARE THEIR FAITH
7. Worldliness / Mammon - Mammon is the word used by the King James translators for money or materialism. But the Greek word, μαμωνᾶς - mamónas (mam-mo-nas’), is actually a little stronger than that. The connotation is that of greed, lust, and gluttony. It is worldly desires that influence you and take the place of God in your life. When we live for our worldly desires it is idolatry.
In John Milton’s epic poem, “Paradise Lost”, he paints a vivid portrait of hell. In it, Milton showed Satan as a fallen commander in chief surrounded by his demon generals. Among them are Moloch, Dagon, Astarte, Osiris and Belial. Each of these, of course, was the god of an idol-worshipping culture in ancient times and is mentioned in the Bible. But Milton’s poem depicts another demon standing at Satan’s side. That demon’s name is Mammon.
We may think that we would never bow to another god(s). But when we allow worldly desires to influence us we are bowing down to the demon, Mammon.
It is Mammon that kept the rich, young ruler from following Jesus. It is Mammon that caused Demas to abandon the faith. And Mammon is what keeps people from following Jesus today. It is also what keeps many Christians from sharing their faith.
There is a cost that comes with sharing your faith. Any Scott Tucker writes, “Because it will cost us something and we have become comfortable. But our comfort is deceptive. One day we will be wholly reconciled with God. This life on earth is our only opportunity to lay ourselves on the altar of sacrifice for Christ and His message. Our only opportunity is to "give" something to Him. A gift actually costs us something.”
Matthew 6:24 (NKJV) - “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
1 John 2:15 (NLT) - Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.
PRAYER THOUGHT - Dear Father in Heaven. You are the one, true, and living God. I want to praise and worship you alone. Keep my eyes on you. Please keep worldly desires from tempting me and becoming a god in my life. Forgive me where I have fallen into the trap of "I need this." The only upgrade I need is in my Spiritual walk with you. In Jesus' name, AMEN!
