8# - Don’t know how / lack of training -

Peter and Lori Querin write, “The(y) need to defend our beliefs to a skeptical society leaves most Christians unprepared due to a lack of apologetics training. Most Christians either don't have the time or are unwilling to spend the time needed to educate themselves in this area.”

There are many people who say that they can’t share their faith because they don’t know how. Yet they are not to be found when classes on evangelism are held. I’m not sure if this is a legitimate argument or not.

If it is than you need to let your pastor or church leaders know. They are not doing their job in training people to share the great commission (Mt 28:18-20).

Having said that, there are countless classes, articles, and websites devoted to sharing your faith. There may even be classes taught at a church in your area. There are more books, videos, and other tools available today than in any other time in history. So again, I don’t know that the argument holds merit.

God has also given us the tools we need to accomplish his purposes. We simply need to put them to work for us.

The first tool he gives us is His Word. The Bible is the ultimate handbook on evangelism. With this tool we can succeed in sharing our faith. We should never forget that God’s word is important to all areas of life including evangelism and outreach. A daily study of God’s word will help you to be ready. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Holy Spirit is another tool that we have to use. We need to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit that indwells within every Christian. The Bible tells us that his Spirit will give you the words to say (Lk 12:11-12). The Spirit also gives us gifts to help us complete the different jobs that God may have us to do including sharing our faith (1 Co 12:4-6; Ro 12:6-8). It is the Holy Spirit that convicts the hearts of the unbeliever (Jn 16:8). We cannot ignore the importance of God’s Spirit in sharing our faith.

God has also given us brothers and sisters in the faith. It is always good to have a someone with you when you share your faith. Jesus sent his followers out by twos. Part of this has to do with establishing reliable testimony (Mt 18:16). But it is also for strength (Ec 4:12). The church is an important tool in evangelism and outreach.

But I believe that the real reason isn’t a lack of training as much as an unwillingness to put the time and effort into training. That goes to the heart of the matter… They just don’t want to do it. And that, my friends, is rebellion against the commission that Jesus gave his followers. And ultimately, since Jesus has all authority, it is rebellion against God Almighty himself.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Heavenly Father; You are great and mighty. Your word and commission are not to be ignored. Forgive me when I have failed to share my faith or train others to go and share the gospel message. I ask that you will give me the courage to share my faith in any and all situations. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
