31 Christian Ways to Reduce Stress

2. Go To Bed On Time - Psalm 3:5-6

2. Go to bed on time - Psalm 3:5-6

Psalm 3:5-6 - I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.

One of the hardest things to do when you are stressed is to go to bed on time. Some people may actually say, “What time is ‘on-time’”. We get so busy we tend to stay up until everything is done. We may play video games or stay up late watching some movie just because we feel we need some time to relax and unwind. But the truth is that going to bed early is actually better at relieving stress than staying up watching “the bloob tube” as my father used to call it.

You will not find the saying, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes the men healthy, wealthy and wise” in the Bible. That quote can be traced back to Benjamin Franklin who also said, “The early morning has gold in its mouth.” Although you may not find wealth in going to bed and getting up early doctors have found that those who get a good night of sleep are healthier and their level of stress is lower.

God created rest. God rested on the seventh day after creating the world. It wasn’t because he need rest but he did it for us. He created us as beings who need sleep and a break from labor. In fact, “Sabbath” means rest. He instituted a day of rest from labor one day a week. He created the night so we could sleep and be refreshed for the next day of labor.

The psalmist, David, wrote a beautiful song about how even when his enemies are rising up against him he can sleep well at night. He can do so because he trust in God to keep watch over him. If you want to reduce or even remove your stress than go to bed early and trust God with the problems you have.

Jesus said, “Come to me all of you who are weary and heavy laden for I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28-30). Christ wants us to have rest; rest from our labors, sin, temptations, stress, anxiety, and all kinds of burdens. The application to us for this is both physical and spiritual. You can find rest in our God!

May God bless you as you sleep well in the comfort of his arms. Trust him with the things you have put before him in prayer. Find your rest in Him.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God, I praise you for you created rest just for us and you set the example by resting on the seventh day. I know that there are times that I do not go to bed “on-time” and get enough rest. Help me to trust in you. Help me to relax and let you handle my troubles. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for taking away my sin. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray, AMEN!
