28 Helpful Hints For Bible Reading

11. Read The Introduction - Psalm 119:16

11. Read the Introduction of the Bible book you are studying. Psalm 119:16

Psalm 119:16 -I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

I once had a 5th grade teacher that encouraged us to read the introductions of the books she had us read as well as go over the table of content. When the test time came around most of us were prepared for the content of the book. But we were shocked that several of the questions came from the introduction and table of contents. Many of us had not read it and it dramatically changed our grade.

There is a lot of good information in the introduction. Some Bible don't have an introduction but the information is available on line or in a Bible dictionary or handbook. The introduction tells who we believe is the author God used to write down his word. It also introduces the audience the work addresses. There is often information on approximately when the book was written too. But the man information is the purpose for which the author intended and what he hoped to accomplish.

Yes, you can read the book without reading the introduction but why not add a little color and flavor to the words you are about to digest? Taking a few minutes more to read the introduction will help you have a better understanding of the message God has for you.

If you are interested there is a whole series of video introductions/overviews of the book you are reading at https://thebibleproject.com. They also have downloadable charts of the overview. These videos are very informative and fun to watch for elementary children to adults.

May God bless you today as you dive deep into his message for you. I pray that you will read the intro before the big test!

PRAYER THOUGHT: Oh Holy God, How you have worked throughout the ages in the hearts of men to bring this message to us. Your spirit has inspired men to write it down. Your love has protected the word throughout countless attempts to wipe it out. Thank you for giving your word to me. It has changed my life and my heart. Thank you for Jesus in whose name I pray, AMEN!
