28 Helpful Hints for Bible Reading

3. Engage Your Mind - Luke 10:26

3. Engage Your Mind - Luke 10:26

Luke 10:26 - “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

In this passage from Luke, a man asked Jesus what is the greatest commandment. Jesus turns the question back on him and said, "How do you read it?" Although how you read something can make a difference what Jesus was asking was his opinion on the matter.

But I like that question. HOW? I like it because it puts into question our whole mindset before we ever start. Wednesday I told you that we have to have our hearts in the right place. But we also have to have our mind in the right place.

HOW? Well, sometimes we have to get out all the junk. All the preconceived notions and false ideas that we have learned. We have to purge the system and start fresh. We have to let God out of the box. We have to ask God what he wants us to understand in our reading.

HOW? We also have to engage the mind. I find sometimes when I am reading that I lose track of what I am trying to read. This especially happens when I am tired or when there is a long reading that goes on and on. I find that my mind wonders. I have to shake my head and go back and read parts over again. Before I read the word I try to focus my mind.

HOW? We also have to comprehend what we are reading. Often people will try to read the Bible from cover to cover. But the Bible is not in chronological order and it doesn't read like a novel. Perhaps you might use a different reading plans to make it better. There are some chronological reading plans, sectioned reading plans, duel reading plans, and more. At BCCC we are currently using a sectioned reading plan by Michael Coley. There are a variety of reading plans which can download at http://www.Bible-Reading.com.

HOW? We can also get insight from others who read the Bible daily. They can give you some help in making it stick. During this month I will give you more hints and helpful ways to engage your mind and understand what you are reading in my blog.

Jesus congratulated the man for having the right answer. The man replied, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

The man really didn't fully understand the scope of what he read. He wanted to make sure he was doing enough to get by. Jesus tells the man the story of a good Samaritan who stops to help a Jew that had been beaten and robbed. The moral of the story was not just to love your own countrymen but to love those who hate you and put the needs of others before your own. I am sure his mind was blown....as is mine.

May God bless you as you engage your mind in God's word today. May he bless you with understanding and help you to hide his word in your heart.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Lord, Your word tells me that you are wise and all-knowing. It tells me that all wisdom comes from you and that if I lack understanding I should go to you. So Lord, today, as I read from the Bible, open my mind and fill it with understanding and wisdom and help me to apply it to my life. In Jesus' name, AMEN!
