10. Good Shepherd - John 10:11
10. Good Shepherd - “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11
I love the fact that shepherds were invited to the nativity. Shepherds? Who would invite shepherds? They hang around with sheep all day. They aren't as well educated, sophisticated, or well off as you would think one would be if they were invited to the birth of God's son. But the good shepherd made sure they would be there.
It really makes more sense than you would think. Abraham, Issac and Jacob were most likely shepherds. King David was a shepherd. There is a long line of decedents of Judah who were shepherds.
The shepherds probably spent many hours around the campfire discussing the politics of the day and awaiting the promised Messiah who would rule on the throne of David. They were probably more watchful for the Messiah than any of the religious leaders of the day. They were ready and willing to listen.
Jesus takes care of his sheep like a good shepherd. He protects, provides, guides them, and is willing to die for them... and he did. He knows his sheep and his sheep know his voice and follow him. When one goes astray Jesus goes after them. And he rejoices when that one sheep has been found.
I praise God for Jesus, my good shepherd. May God bless you today as you follow the voice of the good shepherd.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who leads me, feeds me, provides and protects me. Help me to follow his voice always. Give me the wisdom to trust and not stray. And help me to be a good shepherd too. In Jesus' name, Amen.
