21. Nip It in the Bud! - Galatians 5:9

Galatians 5:9 -A little yeast leavens the whole lump of dough.

One of my favorite shows of all-time has got to be The Andy Griffith Show. Of course, Barney weighs into that factor. I love the way he walks, talks, and acts like a clown. Some of his sayings are notorious not because he invented them but because the way he said them. My favorite saying is “We’ve got to nip this in the bud.”

Of course what he is talking about is taking care of small matters before they become big. In the New Testament era they had a similiar saying, “A little yeast leavens the whole lump of dough.” A little trouble can bring about big problems. Paul used this idiom when he spoke of false teachings of one individual that effected the whole church.

Small problems don’t just go away on there own. If ignored they can balloon out of control and cause you a whole lot of headaches. When a small problem arises give it to God on the spot. Talk to him about it in prayer. Don't wait until it's time to go to bed to try and pray. Stop where you are and do it.

It is one of my pet peeves that we often tell someone we will pray for them and then we don’t. We get distracted or we forget and we never put it before God. We need to stop what we are doing and pray for that person on the spot. We need to pray for little problems when they are little instead of waiting for them to get bigger.

I was waiting in the mall for my wife to shop one time when two people met up with each other near where I was sitting. They must have old friends because they laughed and hugged when they greeted each other. I couldn’t help but hear the conversation because they were rather joyful. Then one of the friends said, “I noticed you haven’t been in church lately. Are you okay?” With that the person hymned and hawed all around and then said, “I have a small problem.” Their tones went hushed as they talked for a few minutes. My attention went elsewhere but when I look back at them again they were praying. One friend holding up another’s “small problem” and taking it before God. I was choked up by the sight.

So don’t let your small troubles become big problems. Pray to God and “nip it in the bud.” May God bless you today as you lay your small and big problems at his feet. Walk away and don’t pick them up again. Trust the Lord to handle even the smallest of problems.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Holy God; I praise you for being able to hand all my problems both big and small. Thank you for being there for me when I call. I ask that you help me to be more diligent in praying for others and taking every little thing to you. You are awesome! In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN!
