20. Don’t be Lazy - Proverbs 18:9

Proverbs 18:9 - The one who is truly lazy in his work is brother to a vandal.

When I was a kid my mother used to come into my messy room and say, “It looks like the Vandals broke in to pillage and sacked up your room.” When I read Proverbs 18:9 I always smile and think of my messy room.

I am learning the hard way that taking one step now will save you 3 or more steps later. I am trying to be patient and teach that to others in my house too.

I was in a bit of a hurry so I quickly put the trash bag outside the door intending to take it to the dump. But time got away from me and the bag set outside the door. That night some wild animal found a quick buffet of my trash and the wind help spread the mess across the lawn. The next morning I woke to a beautiful sunrise and a messy lawn that took a while to pick up. It would have only been another 2 minutes to secure that bag in the trash can but I took a shortcut and paid for it.

While the family was sick I started washing the clothes (much to my wife’s dismay). One thing that frustrated me was having to take the time to fix the clothes that were inside-out. Now I could understand my wife’s frustration and I have made a better effort to straight my clothes before I put them in the hamper.

There are other things you can do to reduce stress by just taking one extra step now. When I cook I keep clean soapy water in the sink so that I can go ahead and wash the dishes as their dirtied so that I don’t have a big mess to clean up later. When I eat in the car I carry my trash to the can when I get out so that I don’t have to sort through old trash later when I clean out the car. I fill up the extra gas can when I go to fill up my car so when it comes time to mow the grass I don’t have to take time to go to the gas station.

May God bless you as help you to take one step now to avoid 3 or more later.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God, I praise you for eternal nature and majesty. Help me not to be lazy but to think a few steps ahead. Thank you for Jesus and the love that you showed me through the cross. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
