15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday - Ecclesiastes 11:10

Ecclesiastes 11:10 - Remove sorrow from your heart,

and put away pain from your flesh,

because youth and the prime of life are fleeting.

I once did a Bible Study with a group of teenagers on the book of Ecclesiastes. When we had concluded after about 8 weeks I asked the kids what they thought the lesson “The Teacher” was trying to get across. One of the boys said, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanityI” in his best over-the-top Shakespearian voice. Another boy said, “Life is pointless without God.” And then a girl said, “God should be the prime directive of our lives and not all the other stuff.” I was proud that my class seemed to follow the along and understand that following God is the main point of the book (Ec 12:13-14)

Let’s face it. “The Teacher” does come across a bit melodramatic and depressing when everything seems to have no meaning at all. Sometimes Ecclesiastes reminds me of the old films they made us watch in drivers ed like “Signal 30,” “Last Date,” “Red Asphalt,” and “American Highway: Way of Life, Way of Death.” The fact that anyone wants to drive after seeing those is really amazing. (all of these old classics can be viewed on Youtube…if you dare!) But I guess we do because no one ever thinks it will happen to them.

One of my favorite sayings of “The Teacher” is Ecclesiastes 11:10 which basically says enjoy yourself while you can because your good days quickly vanish. I believe this is good advise for us old, uptight adults too. We need to let the young kid in us come and and play at times. No, we don’t have to ride a skateboard or go bungee jumping. We just have to learn to have fun again.

Remember when you used to pick up a stick and become a pirate or musketeer with a sword? The big box a toy came in was 10 times more fun than the toy inside. And let’s not forget the simple pleasure of letting the mud ooze through your toes as you walked barefoot through a muddy puddle. That’s the spirit! Now get out the play dough and the coloring books and enjoy.

Games for grown-ups are good too. I once watched a group of elderly men and women laughing while they sat around the table playing Mexican Train Dominoes. They laughed so and carried on like children. No one would have accused them of being old.

You can also do other things that help you take hold of your inner child. Use your imagination and watch the stress melt away.

May God bless you as you celebrate the abundant life that we have in Jesus Christ.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God; I know that you laugh with us when we let the kid out. I thank you for my grandkids and playing on the carpet. I praise you for the simple games that we made up when we were kids. Help me to let go of the “adult worries and responsibilities” once in a while and embrace the joy of youth once again. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN!
