31 Christian Ways to Reduce Stress

1. Pray - Philippians 4:6

1. Pray - Philippians 4:6

Philippians 4:6 -Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

I know that this idea may seem obvious but when you are drowning in the storms of life sometimes prayer is the last thing that comes to mind. We may know and acknowledge God in our times of trouble but remembering to lay it all out on the table to him can be difficult.

We may think, God knows the trouble that I am going through so why doesn’t he do something about it? But we need to have a broken and contrite spirit. There is something humbling about calling out from the waves, “Lord, help me”. When we humble ourselves before God and submissively ask him for help he will lift us out of the ways (I Peter 5:6-7; Matthew 14:22-34).

Worse than not praying is not even knowing what to say. Sometimes the hurt is so deep that we can’t even express it with words. Sometimes our heart just moans and groans.

I was going through a really tough time in life when a friend came to me. Instead of praying for me he said that he was going to pray with me. He asked me to start. I could barely get the words, “Dear God,” out of my mouth before my heart literally threw up all the emotions that were bottled up inside. I cried and cried and could not say even one intelligible word. My friend put his arm around me and we cried together. If only Job’s friends had been as compassionate as this friend.

The Bible says there will be times like this. That is one of the blessings of having God’s holy spirit indwelling in the lives of Christians. Romans 8:26-27 says, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

And some times what is worse than not knowing what to say is trusting God to handle our problems. Oh, we know that he can do it but his timing and his way of doing it might not match how we want it done! We might hand over our problems to him but when he doesn’t act quickly we take our problems back.

I must admit that this can be my worse cause of stress. I might as well say, “God remove all my stress and do it right now.” But God does not always work that way. God works for my blessing and benefit when it fits into the bigger picture of the kingdom. Sometimes I have to learn a valuable lesson and sometimes I have to learn to bear the weight. But in either case I have to trust God who sometimes will say, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:1-10).

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Lord, You are wise and all knowing. You know what is best for me. Help me to humble myself before you and ask for help. When I don’t know what to say hear the Holy Spirit speak on my behalf. And help me to trust you in all circumstances. Help me to rest in your grace and grace alone. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
